American Dietetic Association - This site has a wealth of information about food and nutrition. The site has easy-to-read fact sheets and a search engine to find a dietitian. It also has a nutrition and activity guide for parents called Healthy Habits for Healthy Kids, available in both English and Spanish. The site offers books and educational products for sale. American Heart Association - The American Heart Association website has a wealth of information about heart disease and prevention of heart problems. They have information on many heart diseases, and interactive health tools for prevention and treatment. Children and heart disease, healthy lifestyle tips are also included. American Obesity Association - This agency works to change public policy and perceptions about obesity. One of their goals is to increase awareness that obesity is a complex disease, not a failure of the person with the condition. Their web site covers what obesity is and what causes it. The site offers strategies to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. You may share your story and read stories of others living with obesity. The site has a section on the growing problem of obesity in children and teens. The site also discusses weight loss fraud and how to protect against it. Statistics, news and current research are also included. Advocacy issues related to obesity are addressed. The site links to helpful tips and recipes from the National Institutes of Health.

Center for Science in the Public Interest - The Center for Science in the Public Interest is a strong advocate for nutrition and food safety. The CPSI is a nonprofit food watch dog group that turns to the courts to stop deceptive labeling, fraudulent advertising, and the use of dangerous food additives. You may subscribe to their Nutrition Action Healthletter for further information. Some fees apply. Always check privacy and security policies before ordering anything online. While much of the content of this site is very helpful, some of their coverage is one-sided.

Delicious Decisions - This site is the online cookbook of the American Heart Association. The cookbook has many healthy recipes and a handy recipe "Quick Find" to quickly locate the recipes you want. “Quick Find” will search for recipes based on your requests (such as low salt, vegetarian, international, etc.). This site also has information about healthy eating, fitness and weight loss. Tips for grocery shopping, reading food labels and eating out are also included.

Dole 5 a Day - Please note this site will soon have a new name, Dole Superkids, as well as new content. This change is in light of new guidelines which recommend far more than just "5-A-Day," but rather, up to thirteen servings of fruits and vegetables a day, depending on age. The new site will have more content for parents, information in Spanish, a newsletter, and streaming video. The goal is to help prevent and decrease childhood obesity. Currently this site has tips for parents, teachers and kids about eating fruits and vegetables every day. Kids can learn about fruits and vegetables through games, interactive tools, songs, pictures and videos. The site has online lesson plans for teachers. Dole Foods partnered with the National Cancer Institute and Produce for Better Health Foundation to create this site. The site is careful not to promote the sales of Dole products and has a strict privacy policy.

Food Allergies in the Real World (Teens) - This is the teen sub site of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. Browse “Food Allergies 101” to learn more about food allergy basics and food allergy issues that may affect teens. The site includes personal stories of teens living with food allergies. The site also has helpful tips and advice about handling your food allergies during school, when you are out with friends and how to talk to the people you date about your allergies. If you have a friend with a food allergy, be a P.A.L. (Protect a Life). This program will help you know what do if your friend is allergic to certain foods. Food and Drug Administration - This web site is for both the public and industry professionals. Parts of the site can be quite technical, so stick with the consumer sections. The above link goes to the part of the site that addresses food safety, nutrition, weight loss, cosmetics, and information about how to shop wisely on-line. Be sure to click on the internal "FDA Home" link to access press releases, hot topics, drugs, medical devices and more.

International Food Information Council - The International Food Information Council helps keep people informed about current food and nutrition topics. Issues include weight loss, caffeine, sweeteners, food labeling, food allergies and much more. The site also has sections for teachers, students, and reporters and offers a great list of resources. Some of the information on the site is available in Spanish. The site has a link to a new site for kids called Kidnetic, a healthy eating and active living Web site for kids ages 9-12 and their families.

Kidnetic - Kidnetic.com is a cool site for kids who like to play hard and have fun! Kids learn about how eating right helps them feel good and play better. The site includes games to play inside or outside, alone or with friends. The site also has family-friendly healthy recipes. Kids may use the online Kidnector service to email parents. Kids, always check with your parents before sharing any personal information, including email addresses, online. The site also has a section for parents for further information.

Mayo Clinic: Healthy Living Centers - This Healthy Living section of the Mayo Clinic Health Oasis has practical advice about many health issues. Topics include: health for babies, children and teens. Complementary and alternative medicine, fitness and nutrition are addressed. The site also covers men's and women's health, pregnancy, senior health, sleep, stress and working life. Check out their health tools to help you assess your own health. You can also find information about weight loss and discover hundreds of healthy recipes on this site.

MyPyramid.gov - In April 2005, the new MyPyramid food guidance system replaced the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992. The new system can be adapted based on age, gender and activity level. It offers many options to help people make healthy food choices and be active every day. The site describes each food group and offers tips on how to eat a healthy diet. The site is also interactive. On MyPyramid Tracker, you can assess the quality of your food intake and physical activity. National Eating Disorders Association - This web site has a wealth of information about eating disorders. The site covers what causes eating disorders and how to prevent and treat them. The site has helpful tips for teachers, coaches, family and friends to help students with this condition. You may search the site for treatment providers, research studies and support groups. You may purchase teaching materials online. You may join the Parent and Family Network (PFN), a clearinghouse for current news about treatment, resources, and advocacy. Scrub Club - This is a fun, interactive site geared for children 3-8 years old. The site shows kids how to wash their hands through games, music and activities. The site also has tips for teachers and parents. Teacher downloads include a teacher’s guide, coloring pages, stickers and more! The site works best with sound and a high speed internet connection. Kids, always check with your parents before giving anyone your personal information.

United States Department of Agriculture: Food Safety and Inspection Service - The Food Safety and Inspection Service is the public health agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in charge of ensuring that the nation's supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. Their site has a wealth of information about how to protect the public from food poisoning. The site has many fact sheets on how to prepare different types of food safely. It also has a guide on how to prepare a turkey. The site covers how to keep food safe during an emergency. The site includes news and food safety updates and recalls. The site explains how to report a problem with a food product. You may ask a food question online; their automated response system is available 24/7. The site has a section for kids and teens.
